Award in Education and Training (AET) - Level 3
The Qualification Purpose of the Award in Education and Training (AET) is to provide students with the necessary skills and knowledge to teach or train individuals in a diverse range of contexts. The AET program is designed to be an introductory course that prepares students for a career in teaching or training, providing them with a foundational understanding of pedagogical theory and practical teaching skills.

It is important to note that the AET certification is not designed to impart expertise or advanced knowledge in a particular subject area, but rather to provide students with a basic understanding of the principles and practices of teaching and training. As such, it is not mandatory for students to hold a teaching position during the training process, though it can be beneficial for them to do so.

The AET program is particularly suited for individuals who aspire to teach in the Further Education and Skills Sector, which includes a diverse range of educational settings such as adult education, vocational training, and community education. It is also a useful qualification for those who may be interested in teaching in other contexts, such as corporate training or tutoring.
In addition to the AET certification, learners may opt to attain select units from the Learning and Development suite of qualifications. This allows students to tailor their training to their specific needs and interests, and to develop additional skills and knowledge that may be relevant to their career goals. The units that can be obtained from the Learning and Development suite of qualifications are contingent upon the assessment of the student's performance in the trainee teacher's workplace.

Entry Requirements

The qualification has no specific entry requirements, and learners are not required to have completed any teaching practice hours to attain it. However, some employers may require a current DBS Certificate from learners who are currently or intending to work with individuals covered by the DBS regulations.
It is the responsibility of the learners to seek guidance from their employer in this regard and attend any mandatory safeguarding events.

The minimum recommended age for attaining this qualification is 19 years and above.
Duration
Guided Learning Hours
Guided Learning Hours (GLH) for a qualification include all the contact time, supervision, guidance, or tutoring provided by an educator or trainer. For this qualification, GLH is set at 48.

Directed Study
Learners are expected to complete some aspects of their assessment portfolio in their own time. Approximately 72 hours of additional time are expected over the cycle of the programme.

Total Qualification Time
Total Qualification Time (TQT) is an estimate of the total length of time required for a learner to achieve and demonstrate the level of competence needed to obtain the qualification, which includes all learning outcomes. TQT consists of GLH and an estimate of the time a learner spends preparing, studying, or learning that is directed, but not supervised, by an educator or trainer. The credit value of a qualification is determined by TQT, where one credit corresponds to 10 hours of learning. For this qualification, the TQT is estimated at 120 hours.

It is important to note that there are no specific entry requirements for this qualification. However, learners may be required by their employers to hold a current DBS Certificate if they intend to work with learners who are covered by DBS regulations.
Additionally, it is the learner's responsibility to seek advice from their employer regarding this, as well as attending any necessary Safeguarding information events.
Moreover, centres are responsible for ensuring that the qualification is appropriate for the age and ability of the learners, with the recommended minimum age being 19 years and above.
